Elbert Hubbard: A killer Salesman!

Elbert Hubbard was considered a number of great things. But what really stood out to me in the video was the fact that he was considered the 1st official hippie and an overall artistic man. Being a double major in both advertising and graphic design I try to apply both fields into my everyday life. I also am constantly applying both sets of knowledge into my work. It was so refreshing to watch a video about a man who shares the same perspectives.

Although he has the makings of a true narcissist ( hahaha hey who said egotism is a bad thing. ) I found him so captivating, especially when he took a simple soap market and made it into something great. He knew how to sell. Pitching is very important; I can’t strongly express how important it is. The way I like to picture it is ok let’s say you may have a quality product and made a beautiful campaign to support the product. Now let’s pretend you are anti-social or something and you cannot articulate your words properly. You’re stammering and stuttering and no doubt sweating. By not demonstrating that showmanship then you fail to give your audience the reassurance that this product is meant for them and the full benefit of your product. By not mastering the art of pitching you jeopardize your chances of not getting your product out there. After all it’s all about selling the excitement of consumption!

On another note Elbert’s personal life was also very interesting. Not only was this man performing a balancing act between two women “double relationship defines a man as a liar” but he bought the Roy craft, and delve even deeper into the world arts & crafts. Arts and Crafts is defined as a hand based art. A quote I found interesting was “Everything you’re making is built from the head, heart, and your hands.”
